About Downey, CA
Downey is a city of approximately 113,000 residents in southeastern Los Angeles County, incorporated in 1956. Downey is the birthplace of Karen and Richard Carpenter, home to the original McDonald's restaurant (opened in 1953 at Florence and Lakewood Blvd, still operating), and known as the site where the NASA Space Shuttle program's orbiter vehicles were manufactured at the Rockwell International facility. The Columbia Memorial Space Center in Downey memorializes that manufacturing heritage. Firestone Boulevard and Lakewood Boulevard are the primary commercial corridors, with the historic downtown concentrated near Downey Avenue.
Downey's residential grid extends from the older central neighborhoods near the historic core through the mid-century residential tracts in the central areas and into the more recently developed outer residential grid. The wide construction date range in Downey's housing stock means plumbing conditions and service needs vary significantly by neighborhood within the city. A pre-war bungalow on Downey Avenue and a 1970s ranch-style home in the outer residential area present entirely different pipe material profiles and require different assessment and repair approaches, which is why we confirm the construction era and foundation type for every Downey property before recommending any repair or replacement scope.
